Spirituality in counseling encompasses various dimensions and approaches directed at assisting clients in exploring meaning and purpose in life. Therefore, establishing a trusting relationship is crucial whenever a client wishes to explore religious or spiritual issues, which usually are sacred to the individual. An openness and respect for this aspect of the client's life builds on the empathic understanding that counselors are expected to show for clients' diversity. As clients express their religious and spiritual needs, counselors must listen actively to themes and narratives that will become the substance of the counseling process.
