Defining a profession is of extreme importance for a number of reasons. First, it sets the parameters on what laypersons expect from that profession. Second, without clearly identified parameters, practitioners themselves suffer from a lack of professional identity and direction, standards of practice, and a clear and precise sense of mission or calling. Without definitive parameters, a specific profession is set adrift in a world full of professions—one in a field of many. When there are a number of closely related professions, as is the case with the mental health care provider arena, it is even more critical for the lines of distinction to be clearly drawn around each of the related professions.
