When considering the evolution of this profession, one must recognize that the word counseling seldom is used by itself. For example, one is not just a counselor but also works as a college counselor, mental health counselor, or school counselor. The position is modified by an agency or a setting. Others prefer to recognize a type of counseling such as academic, rehabilitation, or career. Still others identify themselves as counselors of a particular population (ranging in age from youth to geriatric groups) or disorder (ranging from attention deficit to visual impairment disorders).
