Validity, in the broad sense of trustworthiness or credibility, is a fundamental concept for all research. It is hard to imagine anything that could be legitimately called ‘research’ if the validity of its inferences were substantially in question; as Shadish, Cook, and Campbell state, ‘all science and all experiments rely on making such inferences validly’ (2002, p. 33).
