The knee is one of the most commonly injured joints of the body. In sports, meniscal (spacer cartilage in the knee) tears, anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tears, and patella (kneecap) injuries are common major injuries. Fractures of the bones of the knee are less common but occur in sports with high-energy activity, such as motorcycle racing and skiing.
