The research on U.S. school organization divides into three levels: the study of schools as organizations, study of school sectors, and the study of within-school organization. Schools as organizations research discusses how schools act similarly or differently than other organizations. School sector research looks at how changes in rules and regulations by school type alter the organization of schools. Within-school organization research discusses how schools organize internally to adapt to institutional barriers. To fully analyze the organization of schools, all three aspects need to be considered because schools include all three levels of organization.
