Reserve Officers' Training Corps (ROTC)

The Reserve Officers' Training Corps (ROTC) has deep historical roots within American and military culture. ROTC provides tuition assistance for cadets to complete a college degree with the understanding that the cadet will join the military upon graduation. The establishment of ROTC at college campuses has spurred major debates, as some believe the ROTC values to be contradictory to the values of liberal educational institutions. ROTC may increase access to higher education but may also introduce discrimination issues on college campuses. The concept of ROTC began with the Morrill Act, which established military training at colleges and universities by requiring land-grant colleges to offer military training as a component of the curriculum.
