Austria is a landlocked country in the center of Europe. It has an area of 83,858 square kilometers and a population of 8.4 million. Immigration has risen in recent years; in 2010, around 10 percent of the population was non-Austrian citizens. The population is aging; in 2009, 23 percent were 60 years and over. In 2010, gross domestic product (GDP) per capita was 30,700 euros based on purchase power parity, and unemployment was 4.4 percent. Since 1995, Austria has been a member of the European Union.
