Administration of Education

The administration of education is a relatively young, applied, and academic field of study, having its roots in the American Industrial Revolution. Current conceptions of school administration are deeply seated in its past and understanding the topic requires a historic accounting that looks at its changing views. Within more contemporary views, the terms administration and leadership are often used interchangeably, in large measure because it is difficult to differentiate them conceptually. In the late 1800s, a superintendent from Providence, Rhode Island, was quoted as saying “The right management of schools is one of the largest social problems with which this generation is struggling.” More than 100 years later, there continues to be a drive to identify and refine appropriate and effective models of educational administration. ...
