Brazilian philosopher and educationalist Paulo Freire (1929–97) is regarded as one of critical pedagogy's most influential theorists. Freire is best known for his book Pedagogy of the Oppressed, in which he presents his educational outlook and the key concepts of his theory: dialogic teaching, liberating education, and banking concepts in education. His work still greatly influences educational discourse, research, and practice.

Freire was born in Recife, Pernambuco, in northeast Brazil. Following the Great Depression of 1929, his family was forced to leave Recife.
