For more than a century, virtually all societies throughout the world have undergone a schooling revolution. Beginning at primary grade levels, and then at secondary levels, and most recently at postsecondary levels, more and more people are spending larger portions of their lives enrolled in formal schooling of one type or another. In a world in which formal education is increasingly pervasive, the term educationalization describes the way in which practices, processes, and forms associated with schooling increasingly penetrate other social spheres, as well as the ways in which formal schooling is assigned more responsibility for social problems that originate in those spheres.
