The Republic of Ecuador is located in western South America, adjacent to the Pacific Ocean. It measures 110,039 square miles (285,944 square kilometers). There are three primary geographic regions, the Oriente in the east, the Sierra, which is the Andes highland area, and the Costa, which is the coastal region. Ecuador has a wealth of resources, including considerable petroleum deposits in the Oriente region. The economy has benefitted from oil exports, but other resources include shrimp, timber, gold, and copper. In 2010, the gross domestic product (GDP) was $57.9 billion, with 14.2 percent from oil and mining, 11.4 percent from commercial trade, 10.6 percent from construction, and 9.2 percent from manufacturing.
