Pseudoscience is a term applied to areas of inquiry deemed not to be scientific but that nonetheless aspire to the status of science or hope to usurp science and employ the generally high cultural standing of science to advance nonscientific ends (for example, to sell products and services). Pseudo-science is a pejorative term. There are few (or no) self-professed “pseudoscientists,” and individuals accused of pseudoscience often work vigorously to defend themselves. Pseudoscience is feared by some because it is believed to hinder scientific progress and to contribute to scientific illiteracy. The relatively high public interest in various forms of alleged pseudoscience is seen as being implicated in irrational thinking and fantastic beliefs.
