Second International
IN 1889, 13 YEARS AFTER the dissolution of the original International Workingmen's Association, a second international socialist/communist organization was formed in Europe. The Second International, as it came to be known, emerged out of a series of meetings convened under the auspices of Belgian, French, German, and Swiss communist/socialist parties. Especially noteworthy among these meetings were the Chur Conference (1881) and the International Labor Conference in Paris (1886). Eventually, the Second International Workingmen's Association was founded in July 1889 with the participation of delegates from 20 countries. Ironically, the new International would be initially headquartered in Paris, France, where the memories of the catastrophic “commune” experiment of 1871 were still alive.
