Sen, Amartya (1933–)
Amartya Sen is one of the most influential contemporary economists. His work spans a range of disciplines, including political and moral philosophy, social choice theory, development studies, and welfare economics. Sen has written on famines, theories of justice, democracy, freedom and liberties, classical and neoclassical economics, development, identity and conflict, the history of ideas, and many more topics. In 1998, he was awarded the Nobel memorial prize in economics. Outside academia, his ideas have greatly shaped the human development approach, a development paradigm that advocates a shift from a narrow economic definition of development to a focus on all constitutive dimensions of the well-being of human beings.
