Freiré, Paulo (1921–1997)
Paulo Reglus Neves Freire was a Brazilian educator and critical theorist who influenced the formation of critical pedagogy and educational theory worldwide, while engaging in literacy campaigns and school reform in Latin America and Africa.
Paulo Freire was born into a middle-class family in Recife, Pernambuco, of northeastern Brazil, on September 19, 1921. During the 1929 world depression, Freire's family was forced to move to nearby Jaboatao, where Freire gained an early consciousness of how poverty and hunger affect education and the community. He returned to Recife to attend a traditional, upper-class, allmale high school as a scholarship student.
