Television
Television, perhaps the most popular medium in the United States since the 1950s, has been central to the cultural history of American masculinity. Its stylized masculine images have reflected historically changing notions of normative male identity and, by giving high visibility to certain masculine types, helped shape those notions.
In programs ranging from sports events to commercials to game shows to children's cartoons, television has reinforced men's cultural dominance and authority by representing them as trim, handsome, and heterosexual, by promoting the sexual appeal of such images, and, in the case of sports, by marketing visions of male physical power and prowess to the near total exclusion of women's sporting events.
