Geography, as a subject matter of enquiry, is rooted in antiquity; however, it was formally organized as a separate discipline only around the last quarter of the 19th century (Mitchell and Murphy, 1991). Although various dichotomies of geographic research have existed in the past, from an academic perspective, almost all geographers identify themselves with the broader distinction of either physical or human geography.
