In 1968, at the height of the protest against racial inequality in the United States, John Carlos and Tommy Smith gave the ‘black power’ salute while on the Olympic victory podium at the Mexico City Games. The protest outraged Avery Brundage, President of the International Olympic Committee, who had them expelled from the Games, but generated overwhelming support among the African American population. Twelve years later, the occasion of the Olympic Games was again used by Americans as a platform for protest.
