Abstract
Two models address respectively processes and contents of social categories in impression formation. In the continuum model (CM), people default to category-based processes to form impressions of others, so they often respond rapidly, captured by schema-triggered affect, stereotypic associations, and discriminatory responses. According to the CM, adequate information and appropriate motivation can override categories and encourage more individuating processes. What are the default categories that capture social cognition? In the stereotype content model (SCM), two fundamental dimensions describe clusters of apparently universal categories for interpersonal and intergroup perception.
