Introduction
Bodies of research literature are not simply (and, sometimes, not even) accounts of the state of knowledge about something. In retrospect, they may be more profitably understood as artefacts of particular historical events, periods or struggles. This is perhaps especially true in educational research although this is not a view which will be welcomed by all readers. Educational practice and research have usually resembled more closely artistic endeavours than scientific ones and have therefore been all the more subject to the winds of fashion.
