What is the condition of the field of Physical Education? How is it adapted to the rise of kinesiology, sport and exercise science and human movement studies over the last thirty years? This Handbook provides an authoritative critical overview of the field and identifies future challenges and directions. Introduction
Presenting an overview of coaching and coach education research as well as suggestions for future study is a tremendous challenge considering the amount of coaching literature. A recent analysis of the scientific articles published between 1970 and 2001 revealed over 600 publications just in English (Gilbert and Trudel, 2004a). To make sense of this amount of information in a limited number of pages we experimented with different ways to classify, regroup, and present the research.
