The evaluation of personality structure and functioning has traditionally been an important component of psychological assessment. However, the rise of behaviorism in the 1970s greatly reduced the role of personality in psychology as a whole and assessment in particular. This trend was effectively countered by the inclusion of Axis II in the third edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (American Psychiatric Association, 1980). The establishment of the multi-axial diagnoses re-established the importance of personality and invigorated personality research.
