In the past decade or so emotion has moved from being a marginalized, even silenced, discourse in organizational and management studies to being something of a ‘must’. The image of the dispassionate organization has at last given way to the sentient organization where our gripes, loves, jealousies, despairs, excitements, angers and so forth shape, and are shaped by, our workplace actions and experiences. From a distance the organization resembles a meteorological map of emotion fronts, pressures, contours and zones. So-called ‘structures’, ‘relationships’, ‘decisions’, ‘deals’, ‘rewards’, ‘downsizings’, ‘leadership’, ‘trust’, and the like are fluid states where the trading and representation of feeling are axiomatic to created meanings.
