There is a long tradition of using the arts as a metaphor to describe organizations. Perhaps the best known example is the organization as theater, which started with Goffman (1959), was more fully developed by Mangham and Overington (1987) and continues to surface in works such as Vaill's (1989), Managing as a Performing Art.
