This chapter describes where strategic management has come from, where it has got to, and what should happen in the future. Table 1.12.1 outlines this chapter's structure. It describes 12 movements that are grouped according to the categories invoked previously: practice, processes, people. But they all connect to one fundamental shift: a move away from a belief in their being one definition of, and approach to, strategic management; a shift toward a plurality of views and the need for individualized practices. If we were to theorize, we might describe this as a move away from strategy's modernist foundations toward a ‘postmodern’ or ‘after-modern’ phase (Pettigrew et al., 2002; Cummings and Wilson, 2003; Whittington, 2003; Cummings, 2004).
