The process of becoming a “geographically informed person,” to borrow a phrase directly from Geography for Life: National Geography Standards (Geography Education Standards Project, 1994), is lifelong and subject to a variety of forces and influences. This chapter intends to illustrate for readers the value of geography as a pathway toward a productive, professional livelihood; for developing a global perspective in an increasingly global society; and for recognizing the significance of geography education and professional development for the nation.
