Field study and observation is a long standing tradition in the discipline of geography. Early explorers in history were in many ways embarking on a geographic field study, which led the great German philosopher Immanuel Kant to once remark that “geography is the consort of history” (James, 1981); many would agree that geography is the consort of almost any other discipline as well.
