“Sometimes we forget that the water cycle and the life cycle are the same”—the renowned scientist and ecologist, Jacques-Yves Cousteau, reminded us. Earth is the only planet known in the solar system where water exists for certain both on the surface as streams, rivers, and lakes and beneath the surface as soil moisture and groundwater. Water covers about 71% of the earth's surface; it keeps the earth's temperature relatively stable and sustains the unique life environment on our planet.
