Cities and urban areas have been the concentration of human populations since approximately 5300 BCE with the development of what is believed to be the first major settlement, Eridu in Mesopotamia (present-day southern Iraq; Andrews, 1995). Urban settlements have grown to the point that since 2008, the majority (over 50%) of the world's 6.8 billion people now live in urban areas (UN-HABITAT, 2010). A composite satellite image of Earth at night displays the lights from mainly urban places and serves as an indicator of the concentrations of people (Figure 29.1).
