As the world enters the 21st century, urbanization, or the process by which cities grow, has become one of the most important contemporary geographic phenomena. Indeed, we are living in an increasingly urbanized world with larger and larger urban populations that reflect greater diversity in ethnicity and culture. The reason for this is because the proportion of the world's population living in urban settlements is growing at a rapid rate, with projections for the future suggesting that in 20 years about 60% of the world's population will live in urban areas.
