Urban geography: Past, present, future

Urban geography is “the geographical study of urban spaces and urban ways of being” (Gregory, 2009, p. 784). Urban geographers focus on cities and their environments in order to analyze cities and urban processes and to apply the methodologies of urban geographers in solving urban issues and in planning the future of cities. More than half of the world's population lives in urban regions, and in the United States it is nearly 80%. Geography, with its social, economic, political, and environmental elements, has an important role in making urban places livable.
