Two generations ago, many people's career horizons were limited to the city or geographical area in which they had been brought up. A generation ago, more people thought in national terms and would travel to wherever in their own country provided a career advantage. Nowadays, more and more are developing internationalism in both the subjective understanding and the objective reality of their careers. The recent publication of a number of special issues documenting the phenomenon of “global careers” (Harris & Dickmann, 2004; Inkson, Lazarova, & Thomas, 2005; Morley & Heraty, 2004) testifies to the growing actuality of, and interest in, this phenomenon.
