Science Communication Scholarship: Themes and Future Directions
This chapter presents an overview of recent scholarship in science communication (SC) and extends the work of earlier reviews (Grunig, 1979, 1983; Lewenstein, 1992; Weigold, 2001) to identify important themes, directions, and approaches of the discipline. We focus mainly on published works in academic science communication journals with particular attention to articles appearing from 2000 to early 2006. Our review begins by describing science communication and explaining several key assumptions behind the scholarship. Contemporary scholarship is then reviewed that has both continued themes from earlier years and developed new theoretical and methodological approaches, followed by a discussion of best practices. We conclude with a look to the future.
