Introduction

This section of the Handbook presents theoretical and empirical work on African Americans in PK-12 school leadership. A central question guiding the work in this section is, “What factors affect the leadership capacity of African Americans in PK-12 education?” The authors make significant contributions to the literature on African Americans in the principalship and in principal preparation programs, African American women in the principalship, race, law, and school leadership, and African American superintendents in public school districts. These contributions are much needed as there is a paucity of scholarly literature that investigates the history, roles, responsibilities, characteristics, leadership styles, working conditions, and impact on student achievement of African American school leaders. ...
