By the year 2030, the number of people aged 65 and older will constitute about 20% of the U.S. population (Administration on Aging, 1998). The existing mental health services for the elderly population are inadequate for this demand (Knight, 1996). Sadovy, Lazarus, Jarvik, and Grossberg (1996) estimated that approximately 2.7% of clinical services are provided to older adults, even though that group represents more than 11% of the population.
