How Do I Assess Family Functioning?
How do I assess family functioning?
Vanessa G.Hodges

Family functioning is an elusive concept that has many dimensions and is defined differently based on theoretical principles and racial and cultural identity. Some practitioners view attributes such as family adaptability (the ability to change roles, rules, and relationships to cope with environmental and personal stressors) and emotional bonding of family members as critical dimensions of family functioning. Other practitioners view family problem-solving abilities and communication skills as critical dimensions. Irrespective of the theoretical perspective, the purpose of assessing family functioning is to learn how families manage typical daily living activities and to determine whether these activities satisfy the needs of individual family members and the family as a whole.
