Engaging children requires a special set of strategies built on a knowledge of child development, a high comfort level with children, and good interpersonal skills. The interpersonal skills that facilitate engagement with adults and children include (a) empathic responding (sharing in what the person is feeling and experiencing), (b) unconditional positive regard (accepting the person in a nonjudgmental way), (c) genuineness (displaying who you are in an honest manner), (d) active listening (showing with your words and body that you are attuned to what the person is saying), and (e) the capacity to help solve a problem or manage a crisis.
