The Handbook for Child Protection Protection Practice presents a comprehensive and critical portrait of the phenomenon of neglect. Drawing on theory, research and clinical practice experience, the contributors cover issues facing social workers. They provide a view of child neglect which moves beyond the current child welfare focus on parental omissions in care. It has been well documented that sexually abused children exhibit significantly higher rates of age-inappropriate and abusive sexual behaviors compared to nonabused children in the general population. Furthermore, although sexually abused children share many of the same psychological problems exhibited by other emotionally troubled children, problematic sexual behavior seems to distinguish sexually abused children from psychiatrically disturbed children who have not been sexually abused. Thus, when children engage in age-inappropriate or abusive sexual behaviors or both, a possible history of child sexual abuse should be considered.
