The Handbook for Child Protection Protection Practice presents a comprehensive and critical portrait of the phenomenon of neglect. Determining the urgency of response to a report is the first step in safety assessment. The worker will be able to determine the speed and degree of intervention with carefully obtained, specific knowledge of the child and his or her circumstances. The criteria that inform the worker concern the incident, the child, the person(s) responsible for the alleged abuse or neglect, the family, and the family's situation. Many states have their own criteria for response times based on the nature of the report.
