Burnout is a process. It has a beginning with early warning signs and a middle in which isolation minimization and denial shield the destructive aspects from view and awareness of the victim. Finally, without interruption, the end stage literally burns out the victim's vital internal adaptive capacity. This understanding provides opportunities to prevent and interrupt the process as we identify it in others or ourselves. Prevention is the best approach to this insidious process. Once it begins, it can be extremely difficult to sort out from constructive attitudes and behaviors.
