Cellulosic ethanol is a second-generation biofuel that is manufactured by transforming vegetation unsuitable for human consumption. As such, it can be produced by using raw materials such as wood, grass, or nonedible parts of plants. It is an alternative to first-generation biofuel, which uses edible feedstock (such as seeds and grains). Hence, one of its main advantages is that its production lessens the strain on the food chain while also being renewable.
