J. Baird Callicott is a preeminent author in environmental ethics and philosophy. He is currently a member of the Philosophy and Religion Studies Department at the University of North Texas. Callicott served as the president of the International Society for Environmental Ethics during 1997–2000.

Callicott's works probe philosophical theory underlying environmental ethics. Much of his work builds on Aldo Leopold's land ethic, which states “A thing is right when it tends to preserve the integrity, stability, and beauty of the biotic community.” The land ethic requires individuals to directly consider this land community as an independent consideration in their ethical dilemmas and debates.
