Roosevelt, Theodore

In 1903 President Theodore Roosevelt designated Pelican Island in Titusville, Florida, as the first national wildlife refuge in order to protect its pelicans, some of which are shown here, and other birds. There are now over 530 national wildlife refuges in the United States.
Theodore Roosevelt exemplified the youth, enthusiasm, and ambitions of his times. As the 26th president of the United States, Roosevelt guided his nation into the 20th century, establishing an influence on not only his but also future generations. His legacy has allowed biographers and historians to continuously present various and diverse aspects illustrating Roosevelt's strenuous life, which included the outdoors.
