In many countries (including the countries of the European Union, the United States, Australia, Ireland, Brazil, the Philippines, Argentina, Venezuela, the United Kingdom, and Russia), there exists a scheduled phasing out of incandescent lamps in favor of compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs). Fluorescent lighting uses between one-fifth and one-quarter of the electricity that the former bulbs use and can therefore contribute to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. Despite this strong argument, there is resistance toward the adoption of these energy-efficient products, notably for environmental reasons. At this time, completely green lighting does not exist.
