Implementation is an important part of the development of a geographic information system (GIS) in an organization adopting the technology, because it signifies the transition from planning the system to using the system. It is a critical phase of the multiphase “system development life cycle,” which consists of project initiation, system analysis, system design, implementation, operation, and maintenance.

During the earlier analysis and design phases, the user needs analysis results in a set of specifications that detail what hardware, software, data, applications, and related components are needed to satisfy the user requirements.
