Since September 1947, the Air National Guard (ANG) has been a reserve component of the U.S. Air Force. It was organized, trained, and equipped as a strategic reserve force. However, the ANG has evolved over its 60-plus-year history as an operational reserve force, operating on a daily basis with the active-duty air force in wartime and real-world steady-state operations. The ANG has more than 107,000 members, about 21% of the total air force (Guard, Reserve, and active duty).
