In 2009 statistics, South Africa had 51.8 million people with an average life expectancy of 59.6 years, according to the Global Health Observatory of the World Health Organization (WHO). The country's health care system is experiencing a major overhaul following the replacement of Minister of Health Dr. Mantombazana “Manto” Edmie Tshabalala-Msimang in 2008. The Ministry of Health has turned its focus to achieving the United Nations Millennium Development Goals, and most of the country's health campaigns are explicit in their relation to these development goals.
