Health Literacy, Model of

Health literacy is a complex topic and depending upon the pedagogical approach taken, intertwines with social and political factors that reach far beyond individual patients or health outcomes. Academics and medical health professionals approach health literacy differently, but may not have different expectations of the process. Most agree that health literacy is about taking responsibility and ownership of health, despite the obstacles presented, and finding a livable solution that enhances the patient's quality of life. Recent scholarship argues that health literacy evolves over the course of time and experience, and is also influenced by other factors such as social networks, education level, and neighborhood location.
