Online Learning

There has been a dramatic increase in online course offerings and enrollments in the past decade. According to a 2013 report by I. Elaine Allen and Jeff Seaman, nearly one third of all U.S. postsecondary students taking courses in 2011 were enrolled in at least one online course. Similarly, the number of K-12 students taking online courses through schools has grown from 45,000 in 2000 to 4 million in 2011. Scholars also predict that nearly 50% of all high school courses will be online by 2019. The promise of providing greater access to a wider range of populations appeals to administrators, with the majority of chief academic officers reporting that online learning is a critical aspect of their long-term strategies.
